The remainder is divided among the retailer, the distributor, the printer, and — if a traditional publisher is involved — the publisher's overhead. The person who spent months or years writing the book receives the smallest share of the transaction.

When you buy a book directly from an author's website, the economics invert. The author receives the majority of the purchase price. The costs of printing, shipping, and payment processing are deducted, but no retailer takes a thirty-percent cut, no distributor takes a percentage, and no publisher claims the largest share. The book is the same. The reading experience is the same. The only difference is where the money goes.

The Author-Reader Relationship

Buying directly from an author also creates a relationship that Amazon cannot replicate. The author knows who their readers are. The reader can communicate directly with the author. This connection — which existed naturally in the era of independent bookstores and author readings — has been severed by the platforms that now intermediate every transaction.
