34 books. Two careers. Zero compromises. Dr. Joel Berman is a practicing general and vascular surgeon, a university professor, and one of the most quietly prolific authors working in America today. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he has published 34 books across genres no single shelf was designed to hold: medical thrillers, World War II history, literary fiction, poetry, screenplays, surgical reference, and dark comedy. He has never had a publicist. He has never had a press agent. For most of his writing life, he didn't have a website. He had an operating room, a typewriter, and a lot to say.
The Life and Work of Dr. Joel Berman
Dr. Berman is a practicing general and vascular surgeon in Fountain Valley, California, affiliated with UCI Health. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University and completed his surgical residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He served as Chief of Surgery, Director of a Center for Breast Care, and Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Southern California Medical Center — positions that placed him at the intersection of life-and-death medicine and institutional leadership. He still practices. The OR is still his primary workplace. The writing happens in the hours around it.
The writing started in Europe. A young Dr. Berman, on the cusp of committing fully to medicine, spent a summer writing instead — and discovered that the two vocations were not opposites. They were the same discipline applied to different material. Surgery demands precision, economy, and a tolerance for uncertainty. So does fiction. His first published works were medical references — Conquering Cancer, Understanding Surgery, Comprehensive Breast Care — books designed to give ordinary people the information their doctors assumed they didn't want. Then came the fiction: over 34 published works, including four murder mystery novels in the Scalpel series (currently under TV consideration), a WWII account of Nazi slave labor compared to Night by Elie Wiesel, his own father's wartime love letters from a trunk that sat untouched for sixty years, humorous medical poetry, and a surgeon's diary from the COVID pandemic frontlines.
